The question we hear most

Can you see Everest from Darjeeling?

Not from the town, which surprises people. From Tiger Hill, yes, on the clearest mornings, and smaller than you imagine. Here is what each viewpoint, and one flight, really shows.

From the Mall

A ridge in the way

Look west from town and the horizon is the Singalila ridge, with Sandakphu at 3,636 m (11,930 ft) less than 30 km away. Everest, 8,848.86 m (29,030 ft), stands 172 km off behind it, and the near ridge wins.

Tiger Hill, 2,590 m

A small triangle, far to the left

Tiger Hill's extra 545 m (1,790 ft) lift you over that ridge. Find Kanchenjunga, then turn about 40 degrees left: Everest, Lhotse and Makalu sit in one tight group you can cover with a thumb.

At first light

Keep looking left

Kanchenjunga is about 95 km nearer, so it turns rose first and fills the sky. The light reaches Everest a few minutes later. Guests told this beforehand come down pleased; guests who expected a giant come down let down.

Sandakphu, 3,636 m

Four of the five highest, in one line

On the Nepal border, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Kanchenjunga share a single horizon. Everest is still small at about 145 km; Kanchenjunga, about 68 km away, is enormous.

The trade-off

What Sandakphu asks of you

It means 32 km of track from Manebhanjan in an old Land Rover, plain lodges and nights below freezing from November. Since 2022, foreign passport holders walking up from India may not sleep in lodges on Nepali ground.

From Kathmandu

The flight that fills the window

Buddha Air's Everest Experience leaves Kathmandu from about 06:15 and is back inside the hour. Seats are sold at half capacity so everyone has a window, and the plane passes within about 32 km of the summit.

Who suits which

Match the view to the trip

With three nights in the hills, spend the mornings on Kanchenjunga and treat Everest as a bonus. If seeing it large is the point, build around Sandakphu or the flight, and read our altitude advice first.

Planning it

More than one dawn

Everest needs clearer air than Kanchenjunga, so the heart of the clear season and several dawns give you the best odds. Tell us which of the three views matters most, and we will say whether your dates can carry it.
