West Sikkim

Pelling, the ridge where Sikkim began

Pelling is less a town than a ridge: a line of hotels at 2,150 m (7,050 ft) above the Rangeet valley, and across the valleys to the north, about 45 km away, the whole Kanchenjunga massif.

Founding places

Sikkim's oldest history, a morning's drive away

The coronation throne at Yuksom, the ruined capital at Rabdentse, Pemayangtse and Tashiding all sit within a morning's drive. In 1642 three lamas crowned the first Chogyal at Yuksom; his son moved the court to Rabdentse, where it stayed until 1814.

Upper and Lower Pelling

Height, and how much road you hear

Upper Pelling sits at about 2,150 m and holds the helipad ground, an open field where anyone may stand for the whole northern arc. Lower Pelling is roughly 250 m (820 ft) below it, on the road that carries the day's traffic. Check which end a hotel stands on before booking for the view.

From Bagdogra (IXB)

About 135 km and 5 to 6 hours by road

The road runs up the Teesta to Melli, along the Rangeet valley to Legship, then climbs about 1,500 m (4,920 ft) to the ridge. A night or two in Darjeeling first makes the last leg far shorter, and Jorethang is the way round if NH10 shuts.

US passports

The Sikkim permit is now online only

Since January 2026, foreign nationals and OCI cardholders must get the Sikkim Restricted Area Permit online through e-FRRO before reaching the border. Indian citizens need only photo ID. Treks beyond Yuksom need further permits through a registered operator.

October to December

When the ridge is clearest

October to December gives the clearest views, and December is the driest, sunniest month, with nights near 3 °C (37 °F). April brings the rhododendrons and mild 18 °C (64 °F) days. From mid June to mid September the monsoon hides the peaks most days.

Who farms the slopes

A new house, in Limbu

Limbu, Bhutia, Lepcha and Nepali families farm these hills. Sikkim's own name is believed to join the Limbu words su, new, and khyim, house or palace, and a Limbu home will still pour you thee, the millet brew, from a tall tongba.

How long to stay

Two nights on a longer route, three or four for the mountain

Cloud often climbs to meet the summits by mid-morning, so Pelling repays more than one dawn. Two nights fit a longer route through the hills; three or four make sense when Kanchenjunga itself is the reason you came.
