Red pandas: where you might see one wild

In July 2026 West Bengal's forest department counted 75 of them in two parks within a morning's drive of Darjeeling. Where they live, what you scan for, the honest odds, and the one place a sighting is certain.

Habre

Not a bear, not a giant panda

Drivers here call it habre. It is about the size of a large house cat, rust red with a white face and a ringed tail, in a small family of its own. The IUCN has listed it as endangered since 2008, with perhaps 10,000 left.

Singalila: 40 counted

On the ridge along the Nepal border

Singalila National Park covers 78.6 km² of bamboo, oak and fir from 2,300 to 4,000 m (7,550 to 13,120 ft). The trailhead at Manebhanjan is about 1.5 hours from Darjeeling, and a registered local guide is a park rule.

Neora Valley: 35 counted

The steepest, least walked forest

Neora Valley runs from 183 to 3,200 m (600 to 10,500 ft). The gate is at Kolakham, 10 km beyond Lava; day permits come from the Lava range office, and jeeps go in at 08:00 and 12:00 as far as Zero Point, 13 km inside.

What you scan for

A rust back along a branch, 10 m up

Look where bamboo grows thick under the trees. A red panda often lies flat along a branch, ringed tail hanging, against moss of much the same color. Fresh droppings on a fallen log tell a guide where to stand still.

The honest arithmetic

Most guests see birds, not a panda

Red pandas feed around first and last light and sleep through the hours a park lets you in. Most guests come back with birds, a barking deer and droppings on a log. If the animal is the reason you come, give it four or five mornings.

Certain: the Darjeeling zoo

Go at 08:30, any day but Thursday

The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park has bred red pandas since 1994 and released nine into Singalila between 2022 and 2024. Entry was ₹180 on non-Indian passports when checked in September 2026. Go at opening, while they move.

Choosing

Decide what the empty mornings are for

On the Singalila ridge you walk toward Everest and Kanchenjunga; in Neora you are in West Bengal's best red panda forest, with birds and few people. Come October to April, March best; both parks close from 16 June to 15 September.
