Kalimpong, 3 nights

The Quiet Ridge: three slow nights in Kalimpong

One house, one early hour a day, and the town that faces Darjeeling across the Teesta. A private short break for a second visit to the hills, or for anyone who would rather meet a grower than tick off a viewpoint.

Day 1

Up the gorge to a house built in 1930

80 km and about three hours from Bagdogra, with no sights on purpose. The Elgin Silver Oaks went up in 1930 for a British jute magnate, then passed to Frederick Desraj, builder of the old Teesta Bridge. Tea is laid in the garden while the bags go up.

Day 2, 06:00

Two chairs on an empty lawn

At 05:15 your driver reads the sky and wakes you only if the snows look likely. The car reaches the Deolo gate as it opens at 06:00: folding chairs, a blanket, coffee from a flask, and the Teesta some 1,500 m (4,920 ft) below.

Day 2, 10:00

Market morning with a guide from town

Your full day falls on a Haat Bazaar day: butter wrapped in leaves, dalle chillies, soft and hard churpi, phumbi under red sauce. Momos at Gompu's for lunch, then the Lepcha Museum in the afternoon.

Day 3

No alarm, cheese on toast, then the growers

Breakfast brings Kalimpong cheese bought in town the day before, melted on toast. Then an hour with the family at an orchid nursery exporting since 1972, and a cactus house begun in 1971. Two old gompas fill the late afternoon.

Day 4

Durpin at prayer time, then the plains

The car climbs Durpin, 1,372 m (4,500 ft), to Zang Dhok Palri for the morning chant; sit at the back with your coat on. Back for breakfast, away by 08:30, and at Bagdogra around 11:30 for flights from 13:00.

Who it suits

Built for a second visit

If this is your first time in the hills and you want Tiger Hill, the toy train and a tea estate, Kanchenjunga at First Light fits better. The Quiet Ridge suits couples, gardeners and slow travelers, private for 2 to 6 guests.
