Darjeeling, month by month

When Kanchenjunga shows itself

The third-highest mountain on earth stands about 75 km north of Darjeeling, but it keeps its own calendar. Here is how the year runs on the ridge, from the weather records and our guides' dawns.

Mid October to mid December

The clear season

The range shows on most mornings, and on the best days it stays out until lunch. November is the steadiest month, with nights near 6 °C (43 °F) and days near 17 °C (63 °F).

Our pick

The two weeks after Tihar

For a first visit we would choose the weeks after the festival: in 2026, from about 12 November to the end of the month. The festival traffic has gone home and the sky is at its steadiest.

Late October

The fullest weeks of the year

In 2026 Dashain runs from 11 to 21 October, with Durga Puja in the same weeks, and Tihar follows from 7 to 11 November. Hotels fill, Hill Cart Road slows, and Tiger Hill's vehicle tokens go first.

Mid December to February

Cold, bright and quiet

Clear dawns continue, and the low winter light is the best of the year. January nights average about 2 °C (36 °F) in houses that often lack central heating, so the room matters more than the hotel: ask for a fireplace.

March and April

Clear at dawn, hazy by breakfast

The first flush is plucked, Campbell's magnolias flower on bare branches, and rhododendron opens on the Singalila ridge. The range is clearest in the first hour and often gone by breakfast.

May

Come for the tea, not the view

The second flush begins, the coppery muscatel tea the district is judged by, but haze hides the mountain on most days. A pre-monsoon storm can still wash the air clean for a morning.

June to September

The monsoon months

Cloud sits on the ridge, July brings about 650 mm (26 in) of rain, and the Singalila and Senchal forests close from 16 June to 15 September. The mountain becomes a rumor; the lanes are empty and deep green.

The rule we plan by

Three nights in one place

Any single dawn can be cloud. Three dawns on one ridge, or a room that faces the mountain, is the surest way we know to see it. Tell us your dates and we will say honestly what they are likely to give.
