Darjeeling tea estates

Sleep where the tea is made

An estate bungalow is a manager's house opened to guests: one dinner table, estate staff, and a factory whose calendar, not yours, decides what there is to see. Of the gardens the Tea Board recognises, only a handful take guests at all.

Glenburn: eight suites above the Rangeet

Two bungalows, the Burra and the Water Lily. Full board covers picnics, the factory tour and tasting, guided walks and the estate's own car from Bagdogra, about 3 hours away. It suits couples, readers, walkers and anyone who wants one house and no itinerary.

Makaibari, below Kurseong

Taj Chia Kutir: a resort inside a tea garden

73 rooms and suites among Makaibari's sections at about 1,400 m (4,590 ft), with a spa and a heated indoor pool, about 1 hour 10 minutes from Bagdogra. The garden walk, factory and tasting are arranged separately. It suits families and grandparents.

Cochrane Place: a stop rather than a stay

31 rooms grown out of the old house of Percy John Cochrane, a Kurseong magistrate, ringed by Makaibari, Castleton and Ambootia, with Anglo-Indian and Nepali cooking. We use it for one night on the way up, and for tea drinkers who like an eccentric house.

The view

You do not need to sleep high to see the mountain

Glenburn sits a full kilometer below Darjeeling town at 2,045 m (6,710 ft), yet all four Water Lily suites face the Kanchenjunga range. Its nights stay above 7 °C (45 °F); up on the ridge, the town averages under 2 °C (36 °F) on January nights.

The room to ask for

Name the room when you book

At Glenburn: Singalila for dawn from the bed, Camellia for the estate's only true twin, a Burra Bungalow suite such as the Planters' if you would rather not climb steps. At Chia Kutir: a valley-view room on one floor near the elevator.

December to early February

Check the factory calendar before your dates

Glenburn makes tea from the end of February to the end of November. In winter nothing is plucked and the bushes are pruned, though the house still shows the factory and pours a tasting. For the sky, the clearest stretch is mid October to mid December.

Trade-offs

No TV, patchy Wi-Fi, no cash machine

At Glenburn the Wi-Fi covers some rooms, cell signal works, and the nearest ATMs are in Darjeeling, 75 minutes up the hill. One kitchen means dinner is agreed in the morning. If you want a concierge and an elevator, take Chia Kutir and visit a garden by day.

How long to stay

Two nights for one full day, three for a second dawn

Glenburn publishes ₹57,230 a night for a suite for two, full board (₹48,500 plus 18% GST), on a tariff page still dated 2023 to 2024, so we re-check before quoting. Tell us the month you can travel and what you want from a house, and we will say which fits.
