Gangtok and the High Lake is a private four-day break in Sikkim's capital, all three nights at a Chogyal's guest house of 1932. You drive 124 km up the Teesta from Bagdogra (IXB), give day two to Rumtek and a Sikkimese kitchen, stand at Tsomgo Lake, 3,753 m, on day three and drive down on day four.

Made forcouples on a long weekend, first visits to Sikkim with four days to spare, families with children over five and Indian passport holders who want to add Nathu La.

Most people do Gangtok too fast. They land, race up the Teesta, climb to the lake the next morning and spend the afternoon in bed with a headache. This journey is built on the opposite idea: a lake at 3,753 m is worth more when your body has had two nights at Gangtok's height to agree to it, and everything else is chosen to make those nights good ones. You sleep all three in one room at The Elgin Nor-Khill, which a Chogyal of Sikkim built in 1932 for the kingdom's guests, so you unpack once and the house is yours to come back to after each early start.

It is a small journey, and the care shows in small places. The permit car waits at the far end of MG Marg, so you walk the promenade before a single shopkeeper arrives. Your guide knows the five-minute paths that drivers pass without stopping. And if you travel on an Indian passport, the pass above the lake, Nathu La at 4,310 m, can be added on a morning the Army opens it; everyone else stops at Tsomgo, which is reason enough to come.

Arrival day is a road day on purpose: 124 km up the Teesta is enough for anyone who woke at sea level. Day two keeps you at Gangtok's height, walking and eating, which is the gentlest way to adjust. Tsomgo takes day three, starting early to beat the afternoon cloud, and you sleep low again that night. Day four leaves Gangtok at 07:00, the hour that keeps a 13:00 flight from Bagdogra calm even when NH10 runs slow.

The longest drive is day 1, Bagdogra airport to Gangtok, about 4.5 hours with stops.

    Your driver waits at the arrivals exit with your name on a board, since only ticketed passengers may enter the terminal, and takes the trolley from there. In the Innova: a packed lunch, water, a rug and, for foreign guests, printed copies of the Sikkim permit. By 12:30 you are rolling towards Sevoke, 35 km on, where the Teesta leaves the hills, and from there NH10 stays with the river through forest and gorge. Your driver slows, unasked, at the stretches that slip in the rains, 29th Mile and Selfie Dara among them. Around 15:15 comes Rangpo, the Sikkim border at 333 m: foreign passports are checked, Indian guests drive on. Past Singtam the road climbs about 1,200 m in 30 km, and near 17:15 the car stops at The Elgin Nor-Khill, which a Chogyal built in 1932 for the kingdom's guests. A white khada and a glass of cherry liquor at the door. Dinner is early. While you eat, the Tsomgo papers are already on our registered operator's desk, and Rumtek's office has told us when tomorrow's session starts.

    At 06:15 you are away, down through Ranipool and up the opposite slope; Rumtek, 22 km off, comes into view near 07:10, inside the window the monastery office gave us. It has been the Karmapa's seat since 1966, and that is all the history this morning needs. Show photo ID at the gate, leave your shoes at the step and stand at the back while horns and drums carry the chant. Then, instead of the gift stalls, your guide takes the path about half a kilometre down to Old Rumtek, the monastery of the 1740s that stood here before the Karmapa came, where you may be the only visitors. Breakfast at the Nor-Khill by 09:30. At 11:00 walk Lal Bazaar with the guide: dalle chillies in heaps, strings of hard chhurpi, dried gundruk. At 12:45 a Sikkimese home cook serves phagshapa, kinema, sel roti and dalle achar, with vegetarian dishes for anyone who asks, and shows you how a momo is pleated. The afternoon is for sleep. Tea at 16:30 in the Kanchen garden, where the Chogyal painted. At 19:00 the permit is confirmed.

    InsiderLal Bazaar has nothing to do with the colour red. It is named for J. Lal, a Dewan of the Chogyal, and went up in 1956; the market has since been rebuilt as a five-storey block.

    Tea and toast at 05:50, laid out at our request. At 06:20 walk down with your guide to MG Marg, which at this hour belongs to sweepers, schoolchildren and the odd monk; no car may enter it at any hour, and Gandhi's statue stands alone halfway along. At 06:50 the permit car waits at the far end: a Sikkim-registered SUV named on your permit, as the rules require. The 3rd Mile checkpost, 6 km out, reads your papers by 07:10, and from there the road gains about 2,100 m in 40 km. Past Karponang the old mule road climbs into the rhododendron and fir of Kyongnosla, and near 08:45 you stand at Tsomgo, 3,753 m. Walk the half-kilometre shore path at half speed, and in autumn look for Brahminy ducks on the water. Eat noodle soup at the stalls and leave within the hour; if you added Nathu La, the car goes on to the pass from here and lunch moves later. Late lunch at the Nor-Khill at 12:30. At 14:30, except on Sundays and government holidays, watch thangka painters at the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom; at 16:00, a massage at the house spa.

    InsiderNear Kyongnosla a five-minute path leads to Tseten Tashi Cave, named for a naturalist who was the king's private secretary. Drivers pass it unless you ask.

    If the weather turnsIf snow or the Army closes the road, the 3rd Mile post tells us by 07:10. We turn for Hanuman Tok's Kanchenjunga view and Enchey instead; nothing replaces the lake.

    Breakfast at 06:15, and your bags go into the car before you finish your tea. By then the driver has heard from drivers already on the road whether NH10 is running clean below Singtam. You leave at 07:00. The road drops about 1,200 m in the first 30 km to the Teesta at Singtam, then follows the river down to Rangpo, near 08:45, where foreign guests are checked out of Sikkim. After Sevoke the gorge opens into the plains, and the last kilometres run between tea gardens. You reach Bagdogra around 11:30, well ahead of flights from 13:00. The driver unloads at the kerb and stays until you message us from inside the terminal. If you would rather see the Teesta from the air, and the state helicopter is flying, we book you a seat from Burtuk heliport instead and send your cases down by car.

  1. Indian guests: the Tsomgo permit takes a passport, voter ID or driving licence, plus two passport photographs each; Aadhaar has not been accepted since 2019. Carry the originals of the scans you sent us.
  2. Foreign and OCI guests: Sikkim's permit is filed online through e-FRRO about 30 days before you reach the state, Tsomgo needs two or more of you together, and Nathu La stays closed to you. The rules in full: /plan/permits-and-visas/.
  3. Children: only children over five are issued Tsomgo permits. A younger child spends the lake morning in Gangtok with one adult, and we plan it with you.
  4. Clothing: Gangtok's November days run about 10 to 17 °C, but the lake at 08:45 is far colder. Pack a down jacket, hat, gloves and shoes with grip for day 3.
  5. Altitude: day 3 is the only high morning. Sleep well, drink water, skip alcohol the night before and walk at half speed at the lake; with a heart or lung condition, or in pregnancy, ask your doctor first. Our general rules: /plan/before-you-travel/#altitude-rules.
  6. Money and signal: cards and UPI work at the Nor-Khill and the larger shops. Carry cash for Lal Bazaar, the lake stalls and monastery offerings, and expect patchy signal on the Tsomgo road.
  7. Shopping: MG Marg's shops keep roughly 08:00 to 19:00 and close on Tuesdays. If shopping matters, tell us your dates and we will place it.

Five questions about Gangtok and the High Lake

Who can go on to Nathu La, and is it worth a fourth night?

Only Indian citizens: foreign and OCI passports top out at Tsomgo, 3,753 m. The pass, at 4,310 m, never opens on a Monday or Tuesday, one 2026 guide lists Friday as closed too, and snow or Army orders can shut it at a day's notice. Civilian permits are capped each day and go within hours in the autumn and spring peaks. Three nights give you one try at the pass; a fourth gives you a spare morning.

Is Tsomgo worth seeing when it is frozen?

It can be, but know what you are choosing. The lake usually freezes from January into March, sometimes until May, and snow can close the road on any winter morning, so a January trip may end at a barrier short of the shore. From October to mid December you usually find open water and the clearest skies; from mid May, rhododendrons and primulas flower round the edge. Whatever the month, be at the lake before the late-morning cloud.

Can a grandparent or a six-year-old manage day three?

Most healthy grandparents do, with care. The lake sits about 2,100 m above Gangtok, reached in two hours of driving, so the stop lasts under an hour, oxygen rides in the permit car and we turn back at the first headache. Anyone with heart or lung trouble, or who is pregnant, should ask a doctor before we book the permit. A six-year-old can come. Tsomgo permits are issued only to children over five, so a child of five or younger stays in Gangtok with one adult that morning.

Gangtok and the High Lake or Kanchenjunga, Face to Face?

Both are three nights from Bagdogra. Choose this one for a capital: a monastery at prayer, a Sikkimese kitchen, MG Marg and a high lake, about 4.5 hours from the airport. Choose Kanchenjunga, Face to Face if the mountain is the point and a morning at 3,753 m is not for you: it gives three dawns from Pelling, for about 5.5 hours on the road each way. From Gangtok the range shows on clear mornings, but it is not the reason to come.

Why the Nor-Khill, and not a resort outside town?

For this journey, because of where it stands. The Nor-Khill is in Gangtok itself, so Lal Bazaar and MG Marg are a walk rather than a drive, and on the lake morning the permit car collects you at the end of the promenade. It is also the Chogyal's own guest house, with 25 rooms and suites, a spa and the Kanchen garden. For forest grounds and quieter nights, the Taj at Pangthang or MAYFAIR at Ranipool can replace it, at the cost of a drive into town each day.
