In short

Is Stillness at Dhulikhel right for you?

Stillness at Dhulikhel is a private four-night wellness break in Nepal, built on three all-inclusive nights at Dwarika's Sanctuary on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu valley. From Tribhuvan airport you drive about an hour up to the Sanctuary, then come down through Panauti and Bhaktapur to a last night at Baber Mahal Vilas in Kathmandu.

Made forhoneymooners and anniversaries, couples who need a real rest, professionals between deadlines and anyone curious about Ayurveda and yoga.

Not for you ifyou want sightseeing every day, or cannot give the Sanctuary its minimum of three nights, choose Everest by Air or Three Royal Cities instead.

Some trips need an itinerary. This one needs permission to stop. Dwarika's Sanctuary sits on the hill above Dhulikhel, the old Newar town on the eastern lip of the Kathmandu valley, and since January 2026 it takes guests for three nights or more, all inclusive. The reason is the programme. An Ayurvedic doctor sees you on arrival, and the next three days follow from that conversation: yoga at sunrise, breathwork in a room walled with Himalayan salt, a massage in the valley's own style, and a walk to the monastery at Namo Buddha.

Our part stays quiet. Your health notes reach the Sanctuary's doctors before you fly, so the first conversation starts from what matters. There are no early starts you did not choose and no drive longer than an hour at a stretch. The one walk of any length follows the story that named its hilltop, of a prince who gave his body to a starving tigress, and ends at a monks' table for lunch.

The route

Why Dhulikhel comes first

The Sanctuary comes first, straight from the airport, because its programme opens with the consultation and builds day by day; arriving tired and leaving rested is the point. Three nights is its minimum and the length of its signature stay. Kathmandu comes last for two reasons. Panauti and Bhaktapur lie on the road back, so the drive becomes a morning of old towns, and a final night 7 km from the airport protects your flight home from the traffic on the Araniko Highway.

  • Sunset from Zero Zone, the Sanctuary's highest deck, with the snow line from Langtang eastward

  • A walk to Namo Buddha for a monastic lunch and a conversation with the monastery's teacher

  • Indreshwar Mahadev at Panauti, where newly married couples hang pots and pans for a happy home

Day by day

Day by day, Dhulikhel to Kathmandu

The longest drive is day 4, Dhulikhel to Kathmandu, about 2 hours with stops, and 1 day has no drive at all.

  1. Day 1 · Kathmandu airport (KTM) Dhulikhel

From Tribhuvan up to the valley's eastern rim

    • 25 km, about 1 h
    • High point 1,550 m
    • Sleep at 1,550 m
    • Easy
Shiva lingams set one behind another through a row of arched stone shrines at Pashupatinath in Kathmandu

Your guide and driver wait at the arrivals exit at Tribhuvan, and the car turns east onto the Araniko Highway, past the brick towns of Bhaktapur and Banepa, 25 km and about an hour to Dhulikhel. Before you flew, we sent the Sanctuary your health notes, medicines and food preferences, so the resident Ayurvedic doctor begins already knowing the basics. Your bags go straight to the suite. The consultation comes at about 15:30: observation and conversation, and a reading of your dosha that shapes your meals and practice for three days. At 16:30 you sit in the Crystal Room, a chamber of quartz and amethyst, for a guided meditation. Then up to Zero Zone, the Sanctuary's highest point, to watch the light on the snow peaks go from gold to grey. At dusk a priest lights the arati at the Shiva Linga maze to mark the start of your stay. Dinner is at Nature's Flavours, cooked from the Sanctuary's own farms.

The momentA priest's flame moving along the maze of eighty-four lingams as dusk settles on your first evening.

InsiderKeep a warm layer in your cabin bag: the rim sits about 200 m above Kathmandu, and Zero Zone turns cool the moment the sun has gone.

If the weather turnsIf you land after 15:00, the consultation moves to tomorrow morning, dinner comes to your terrace, and we ask for the arati at tomorrow's dusk instead.

Nine planets, salt air and the sound of brass

    • High point 1,550 m
    • Sleep at 1,550 m
    • Easy
Forested ridges and terraced slopes falling away from Dhulikhel toward distant hills under a bright blue sky

The day opens at sunrise in the Navagraha garden, nine terraces planted for the nine planets of Vedic astrology, where a priest works through the old invocations for each in turn. Open-air yoga follows in the morning light, paced to what the doctor saw yesterday, then breakfast. Late morning brings your Himalayan massage in the Pancha Kosha spa village: firm, deliberate strokes in the Kathmandu valley's own tradition, with oils warmed with ajwain, fenugreek and camphor. Lunch at Ananta, beside the infinity pool. The afternoon is free for the pottery master's wheel, using clay from nearby fields, or for nothing at all. At 16:30 you breathe slowly in the Salt House, its walls built from 20 tonnes of Himalayan salt. Evening brings sound healing, bowls struck by hand in a still room, and a last look from Zero Zone. We reserved Mako's for dinner: a chef's sequence of Japanese technique, Himalayan river fish and farm produce, with no menu.

The momentFloating at the edge of the Ananta pool, the terraced valley falling away beyond the rim of the water.

InsiderMako's cooks one fixed sequence with no choice. Tell us of allergies or a vegetarian table by breakfast, and the kitchen shapes the evening around it.

If the weather turnsWhen cloud hides the peaks, yoga moves into the Yoga Hall. In rain, the Brahmanda indoor pool under its ceiling of pinpoint lights stands in for Ananta.

  3. Day 3 · Dhulikhel

On foot to Namo Buddha, where the prince met the tigress

    • 11 km, about 0.5 h
    • High point 1,750 m
    • Sleep at 1,550 m
    • Moderate
The gilded roofs of Thrangu Tashi Yangtse monastery at Namo Buddha rising above green shrubs under white cloud

Before breakfast a meditation teacher walks you barefoot through the Shiva Linga maze, dew still on the dubo grass. At about 08:30 your guide sets off with you for Namo Buddha. The full footpath from Dhulikhel is about 10 km through Tamang and Brahmin farming villages, climbing gently to about 1,750 m, and the Sanctuary sets the start by the weather and your pace, with a car to shorten either end. The hilltop is named for a story older than its monastery. In one of the Buddha's earlier lives he was Prince Mahasattva, and in these woods he came upon a tigress too starved to feed her cubs; he gave her his own body so that they might live. The white stupa holds his bone relics, and a stair climbs from it into the trees to the place where the story says it happened. At Thrangu Tashi Yangtse, the monastery above, you sit down to the monks' plain lunch, then stay on with the Khenpo, the resident teacher, for an unhurried conversation about practice. The car brings you back by mid-afternoon for painting with the resident artist and sunset yoga.

The momentA plain lunch eaten beside the monks at Thrangu, then questions for the Khenpo in the quiet that follows.

InsiderKartik Purnima and Buddha Jayanti fill the Namo Buddha hilltop with pilgrims. If your dates meet either, we ask the Sanctuary to move the walk.

If the weather turnsIn heavy rain the car takes you all the way up and back. If the monastery closes for ritual, the farm lunch and the forest Meditation Buddha fill the day.

Panauti's wedding pots, a Peacock Window, a Rana palace

    • 40 km, about 2 h
    • High point 1,550 m
    • Sleep at 1,340 m
    • Easy
Morning fog in Panauti's old square, a brick shikhara temple on the left and a lone walker heading toward the prayer flags

Sunrise yoga and pranayama close the programme at 06:30, and your practices for home come with breakfast. At 09:30 the car drops 7 km to Panauti, once a halt on the salt route between Tibet and India. Indreshwar Mahadev stands where the Roshi and Punyamati rivers meet: a Shiva temple founded in 1294, rebuilt in the fifteenth century, and carved with some of the valley's finest roof struts. Look up at the eaves, where newly married couples hang pots and pans in hope of a happy household. At 11:00 you drive 20 km to Bhaktapur and walk into Tachupal, the old square on its eastern side, where the Peacock Window spreads its tail in the brick front of Pujari Math, an old priests' house that now holds the woodcarving museum. Its date is disputed: the fifteenth century by some authorities, 1750 by others. Lunch is at a cafe on the square, with juju dhau, the buffalo-milk curd set in clay, to finish. At 14:30 the car covers the last 12 km to Baber Mahal Vilas. Swim on the roof at dusk; Baithak serves its Nepali dinner poolside if the evening is mild.

The momentSpotting a young couple's cooking pot hung high under Indreshwar's eaves, a wish for a happy home left with the god.

InsiderJuju dhau sets in unglazed clay, which draws off whey and keeps the curd thick. Eat it from the pot on the square, while the clay is still cool.

If the weather turnsIf a festival fills Bhaktapur, we watch it from a rooftop on Tachupal instead of walking. If the Araniko Highway jams, Panauti is dropped and lunch comes earlier.

Swayambhu's long stair at first light, then home

    • 17 km, about 1 h
    • High point 1,400 m
    • Easy
Swayambhunath stupa in first light, prayer flags running from its gilded spire and monkeys crossing the stone platform

For a flight after noon, the car leaves at 06:15 for Swayambhunath, 5 km west, and stops at the foot of the long eastern stairway that King Pratap Malla laid in the seventeenth century. Climb it the way the last four mornings taught you: slowly, one breath to each step, prayer flags thickening overhead. Monkeys own the railings. At the top, pilgrims are beginning their first round of the stupa, and below you the whole bowl of the valley lies under early haze, the rim where you rested faint on its eastern edge. The car collects you from the far side of the hill, and breakfast at Baber Mahal Vilas is at 08:00. Tribhuvan is 7 km away; for an international departure we leave three hours before the flight, because both the traffic and the security queue are hard to predict. If a charger or a shawl stayed behind at the Sanctuary, tell your guide, who asks the Sanctuary to send it down before you leave. Your guide stays with you to the desk.

The momentThe top of Pratap Malla's stairway, reached one breath at a time, with the whole valley opening below you.

InsiderSwayambhu's monkeys snatch anything that looks like food. Keep water bottles and temple offerings in a closed bag until you are back at the car.

If the weather turnsFor a flight before noon, Swayambhu is dropped and breakfast is at 06:30. If the stair is too much for your knees, the car drives you round to the top.

Choose another journey ifIf you want sightseeing every day, or cannot give the Sanctuary its minimum of three nights, choose Everest by Air or Three Royal Cities instead.

  1. Fill in the health form we send when you book: medicines, conditions, pregnancy and food needs go to the Sanctuary's doctors, so the consultation starts well.
  2. Papers: Indian guests fly on a passport or an original Voter ID, and other passports buy Nepal's visa on arrival at Tribhuvan; the detail is on /plan/permits-and-visas/#documents.
  3. Pack soft, loose clothes for yoga, swimwear for two pools, a warm layer for evening decks, and clothes covering shoulders and knees for Namo Buddha and the temples.
  4. Weather: October and November bring clear, dry days of 24 to 27 °C in Kathmandu; in December and January nights drop to about 3 to 4 °C there and a little colder on the rim.
  5. The stay includes non-alcoholic drinks. Wine and spirits at the Fusion bar are extra, and the doctor may suggest a three-day pause.
  6. With the Sanctuary all inclusive, you need little cash on the rim; for Indian notes, UPI and a Nepali SIM, see /plan/before-you-travel/#money-and-phones.
  7. Nepal keeps time 15 minutes ahead of India. Mobile signal is good on the rim, but we suggest leaving the laptop closed in the suite.

Questions

Six questions about Stillness at Dhulikhel

Ask on WhatsApp
What is Dwarika's Sanctuary in Dhulikhel?

It is the former Dwarika's Resort, renamed Dwarika's Sanctuary and relaunched as an all-inclusive wellness retreat about an hour east of Kathmandu. Its programme follows the five layers of being in yogic thought, with an Ayurvedic consultation, daily yoga and breathwork, a Salt House, a Crystal Room, a meditation maze, a spa village and meals from its own farms. Suites open onto forest, valley or mountain views.

Is there a minimum stay at Dwarika's Sanctuary?

Yes. Since January 2026 the Sanctuary takes guests for a minimum of three nights, all inclusive, with no single-night bookings. The three nights follow its signature programme, from the arrival consultation to sunrise yoga on the last morning. Longer retreats run to six or eight nights. That is why this journey gives the Sanctuary three nights and adds one in Kathmandu.

Is Stillness at Dhulikhel good for a honeymoon?

Yes, if you want calm more than a busy programme. The Sanctuary's suites have private terraces or gardens, the days are unhurried, and most of the programme is done as a pair: yoga, sound healing, sunset at Zero Zone. On the fourth day you stop at Panauti's Indreshwar Mahadev, where newly married couples hang pots and pans for a happy household, and end at a Rana palace hotel.

Stillness at Dhulikhel or Everest by Air?

Both are four nights with time on the ridge east of Kathmandu, but they are built for different mornings. Everest by Air starts at 05:10 for the mountain flight, sleeps at the Dusit Thani on bed and breakfast, and walks to Namo Buddha for the monks' chanting. Stillness has no early start you did not choose: three all-inclusive nights at Dwarika's Sanctuary, a doctor's consultation, daily yoga and a massage. Come here to rest; go there to see Everest.

Can an older or less fit guest manage the Namo Buddha walk?

Yes, in part or in full. The whole footpath from Dhulikhel is about 10 km through farming villages, climbing gently to about 1,750 m, and the Sanctuary sets the start by the weather and your pace. A car can shorten either end, and in heavy rain it takes you all the way up and back. The monks' lunch and the conversation with the Khenpo are the same however you arrive.

Can you see the Himalaya from Dhulikhel?

Yes, on clear days. Dhulikhel is known for a wide panorama to the north that takes in Ganesh Himal, the Langtang peaks, Phurbi Chyachu and Gauri Shankar. October and November give the clearest views, and winter mornings are often sharp. From March the spring haze softens the range, and from mid June to mid September monsoon cloud usually hides it altogether.
