Using this website

The writing, the day-by-day itineraries and the route notes on this site are ours. Read them, print them, send a page to whoever is travelling with you, quote a line with a link back. Please do not republish them as your own work or as another company's: most of them were written after driving the road.

Some photographs are ours and some are licensed from photographers or picture libraries. Where a photograph carries a credit, the credit belongs to the photographer who took it and it stays with the picture wherever the picture goes. If you would like to use one of our own photographs somewhere, write and ask, and we will usually say yes and tell you how to credit it.

A journey page is a description of what can be arranged: a route that works, houses we know, the hours the drives really take. It is not an offer, and sending an enquiry books nothing.

Your quote is the document that binds. It lists each property, drive, guide and permit included, and it is valid for the period stated on it. Where a quote and this website disagree, the quote is right. The booking terms cover what happens from the deposit onwards, including what we do when a road, a flight or a permit fails.

Prices on journey and collection pages are from-prices, per person, two people sharing a room. They are a starting point for a conversation, not the price for your dates. They move with the season, with what the houses are charging in that month, and with what is still free when you ask: the same journey in late October is not the same money as in August.

The price for your dates comes back in your quote, with the date each rate was checked written beside it. What a figure includes and what it leaves out is on the costs page, and that page is the one to read before you compare us with anybody.

Every photograph is labelled with what it shows and where it was taken. Now and then a place we work in has no photograph we are free to publish, and the picture on the page is a stand in: a ridge of the same kind, a room of the same kind, the same valley seen from further along the road. Where that is the case, the caption says so on the page, in plain words.

If a caption is wrong, or a picture is doing a job it should not be doing, tell us. It gets a truer caption or it comes down.

We link out to a hotel's own site, a railway timetable, a permit office, a weather page, because those are the places with the detail. None of them are ours. We do not control what they publish, how accurate they keep it, or what they do with your details if you fill something in there.

A link means we thought that page would be useful on the day we added it. A timetable can be out of date by the time you read it, so where a date matters, ask us and we will check it.
