A honeymoon asks different things of a country: not more sights, but fewer and better ones, rooms worth staying in, mornings without alarms, and a few hours that belong only to the two of you. Bhutan is quiet by habit. Its roads empty after dark, its temples are still used for prayer, and outside the festival weeks its valleys go to bed early.

This week has a thread running through it. On the first evening you are blessed with juniper smoke in Zhiwaling's shrine, built of timbers 450 years old that once stood in Gangtey Goenpa; four days later you walk up to the monastery they came from. In between, the stones for your bath go into the fire while you are still on the mountain, a hamper is laid on a Punakha riverbank before you arrive, and your last dinner in the crane valley is served in a woodshed above the fields, with no one else at the table.

Why Paro comes first

Paro first, for the Tiger's Nest while the week is young and your energy is highest; climbing to 3,120 m on day two also prepares your body for sleeping at 3,000 m in Phobjikha later. Punakha next, 1,000 m lower and warm, for two easy nights after the effort. Then up to Phobjikha for silence, and back to Paro for a last night beside the airport, so the flight home never needs a dawn drive.

Landing in Paro, and a blessing for new beginnings

In autumn, three Drukair routes suit this journey: landing from Bagdogra at 11:00 on Tuesdays and Saturdays, from Kolkata between 14:30 and 16:30 on four days a week, or from Delhi at 15:20 on any day. Your guide meets you at the arrivals exit with a white khadar scarf for each of you, and Zhiwaling Heritage is a short drive away. If you land by 15:30, at 16:30 we go to Kyichu Lhakhang, founded in 659 and among the oldest temples in the country, at the hour when villagers walk its circuit spinning the prayer wheels. At 18:00, back at the hotel, we have asked for a Lhab Sang to be held for the two of you in Zhiwaling's own temple: a short ritual of juniper smoke for new beginnings, in a shrine built from 450-year-old timbers that once stood in Gangtey Goenpa, the monastery you will see on day five. Day 2 · Paro

The Tiger's Nest, at the hour you choose

The one early morning of the week, and it is yours to refuse. The early way takes the 06:45 car to the Ramthangkha trailhead and has you walking by about 07:10, the path almost empty for the first hour. The gentler way leaves at 08:30 and climbs slowly, aiming to be inside the monastery by 12:00, before its midday closure. Distance, height and the monastery's rules are set out once, on /destinations/bhutan/#taktsang. Here the two of you choose the pace, and ponies are booked in case either of you would rather ride to the cafeteria, where the monastery sits framed across the gorge. Most couples take tea there and a long look before the last stretch. At 17:30 Zhiwaling's Menlha spa has the open-air tub ready for the two of you: river stones roasted in a wood fire drop, hissing, behind a wooden partition at one end of the tub, and the water turns hot and smells of khempa leaves. Dinner comes to your suite if you would rather not dress.

Day 3 · Paro Punakha

Over the pass to a tent with its own pool

A late breakfast, and away at 09:30 with the week's big climb behind you. The road runs down the Paro Chhu, skirts Thimphu and climbs the last 23 km to the pass at Dochu La, 3,100 m. We stop for 45 minutes with a flask of tea and a rug laid on the grass, so you can sit rather than stand. The 108 Druk Wangyal chortens were raised by the eldest Queen Mother and consecrated in June 2004, in memory of the Bhutanese soldiers who died in 2003. They stand in tiers of 45, 36 and 27 around a central chorten, walked clockwise, and above them is the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang, finished in 2008 for a hundred years of the monarchy. Between October and February the northern skyline often clears to Masanggang, 7,194 m, and Gangkhar Puensum, 7,570 m, still unclimbed because Bhutan has barred its high peaks to mountaineers since 1994; in April the forest behind the chortens is red and pink with rhododendron. The road then unwinds for 49 km, losing some 1,900 m, into the Punakha valley, where by early afternoon the air is warm enough for shirtsleeves. At about 14:00 you cross the prayer-flag bridge into Pemako Punakha, are given a blessing on the far side, and walk to your tented villa and its own temperature-controlled pool. Lunch is late and slow at Alchemy House, in a restored heritage house. After dark, the Five Nectars bar.

Day 4 · Punakha

A picnic by the river, the dzong in late light

No alarm. At 10:30 the car takes you to Sopsokha, and you walk out along the paddy dykes to the small temple on its rounded hillock: Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility shrine of the Divine Madman. Couples hoping for a child come for his blessing; whether you ask for it is entirely yours. While you walk, our driver and guide go ahead with rugs, cushions, a flask of suja and a hamper packed that morning in Pemako's kitchen, and choose a stretch of riverbank with shade for the hour. Lunch at 12:30 is there, with the water loud and no one else in sight. Back to the villa and the pool until 15:30, when the softer light reaches Punakha Dzong: the wooden cantilever bridge over the Mo Chhu, the steep timber stairs and the courtyards, walked slowly as the shadows lengthen. You stay until the courtyards empty.

Day 5 · Punakha Gangtey

Up through the forest to the crane valley

A last swim, and away at 10:00. The road follows the river south past Wangdue Phodrang, then climbs through Nobding and deep forest to Lawa La, 3,250 m, before the land opens out: Phobjikha, a wide glacial valley of marsh and farmland at about 2,900 m, where the black-necked cranes winter from late October. Gangtey Lodge by 13:00, for lunch on the terrace. At 15:30 you walk a few minutes up to Gangtey Goenpa, and the week's thread pulls tight: the timbers of Zhiwaling's shrine, where you were blessed on the first evening, came from this monastery, reconsecrated in 2008 after its restoration. Your guide shows you the eight great pillars of the assembly hall, and you may meet the gomchen who keep it, lay practitioners who marry and farm. Dinner in the main lodge by its two stone fireplaces. The lodge stands at about 3,000 m, so tonight you sleep some 1,750 m higher than last night: drink water, go easy on the wine and tell us about any headache.

Day 6 · Gangtey (Phobjikha valley)

Phobjikha on foot, and dinner in the woodshed

Breakfast late, on the terrace if the sun is out. At 09:30 you start the Gangtey Nature Trail at the mani wall just north of the monastery and walk about 4 km, mostly downhill: through meadow and the village of Semchubara, into blue pine, then out across the open valley to Khewang Lhakhang, a 15th-century temple of three storeys. The car is waiting there, because we gave the driver your likely time before you set off. Lunch back at the lodge at 12:30. From November to mid-February, an hour on the valley's rim at about 16:00 as the cranes fly in to roost; the rest of the year, two of the lodge's mountain bikes along the valley floor. At 17:30 a massage beside your own fire, in the suite. Dinner is in the Woodshed, the lodge's private dining room a step below the main building, looking over the valley.

Day 7 · Gangtey Paro

The long road west, broken three times

The week's one long road day, about 190 km and six hours at the wheel, broken into three parts. Breakfast at 08:00 and away at 09:00, out of the valley over Lawa La and down to Wangdue by about 11:30, where we stop to stretch by the river. Up to Dochu La for lunch at the café on the pass at about 13:00, the chortens now familiar, then down through Thimphu, with a short walk on Norzin Lam if you want one, and along the Wang Chhu to Chuzom and up the Paro valley. COMO Uma Paro by about 16:30, on its pine-covered hill above the valley. The hydro pool and steam room are the cure for a day in the car, or book a massage at the COMO Shambhala spa. Dinner at Bukhari, the hotel's restaurant, cooked partly from its own kitchen garden. Pack tonight; the airport is ten minutes away.

Day 8 · Paro Paro airport

How this morning runs depends on your flight, because COMO Uma Paro is only ten minutes from the runway. For the Delhi flight at 09:40 in autumn we leave at 07:45, after breakfast on the balcony; in April and May it leaves at 11:55 instead, which leaves time for a walk in the pines. For Kolkata, nonstop at about 11:30 on Wednesdays and Saturdays, or by Gelephu at 11:00 on Mondays and Fridays, the car leaves two hours ahead. Flying to Bagdogra, you have the 16:20 departure, which runs on Mondays and Fridays from October 2026 to January 2027, so it suits a week that began on a Monday or a Friday, and the whole morning is yours: at 10:00 your guide walks you down Paro's painted main street for a last browse among its textile and craft shops, then lunch in town, and the airport by 14:30. On every flight your guide stays at the terminal until the aircraft has gone, because weather at Paro can delay a departure. From Bagdogra, the hills are three hours away if you want a few more days.

Five questions about A Bhutan Honeymoon

Can one of us stop at the cafeteria while the other goes on?

Yes, and many couples do. The cafeteria sits roughly halfway up the Tiger's Nest trail, with tea on the terrace and a clear view of the monastery across the gorge, and a pony is booked for either of you to ride that far. One of you waits there while the guide walks on with the other to the gate and back. The way down is on foot for both, so the one who stopped keeps fresh knees for it.

Why these four houses for a honeymoon?

Each does one thing the others cannot. Zhiwaling Heritage keeps a temple of its own, where the Lhab Sang is held, and its Menlha spa heats the stones on the day you come down from Taktsang. Pemako Punakha gives you a tented villa with a private heated pool by the Mo Chhu. Gangtey Lodge has twelve farmhouse suites with wood stoves facing Gangtey Goenpa. COMO Uma Paro puts your last night ten minutes from the plane, with a spa after the long drive.

Is the long drive on day seven worth it?

It is the price of Phobjikha: about 190 km and six hours at the wheel, broken at Wangdue, at Dochu La for lunch and in Thimphu. In return you get two nights in the quietest valley of the week and wake on the last morning ten minutes from the terminal, whatever time your flight leaves. If either of you dislikes long days in a car, Bhutan: The Western Valleys never drives more than four and a half hours.

Is Phobjikha too cold for a honeymoon?

Not in the months we suggest. From November the nights fall below freezing at 3,000 m, but Gangtey Lodge's suites have wood stoves, heated stone floors and deep baths, and the days are usually dry and bright. January is the hardest month, which is why we steer honeymoons away from it. Between November and mid-February the cold brings a reward: the cranes flying in at dusk to roost on the marsh below.

How do we fly to Paro from India?

Drukair flies into Paro daily from Delhi and on set days from Kolkata and Bagdogra. From October to December 2026 the Delhi flight lands at 15:20, Kolkata flights arrive in the afternoon on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and the Bagdogra flight lands at 11:00 on Tuesdays and Saturdays, 10:40 from December. Seven nights will not make a Bagdogra round trip, because that flight comes in on Tuesdays and Saturdays and goes back on Mondays and Fridays, so we pair Bagdogra one way with Delhi or Kolkata the other. Couples from Mumbai, Bengaluru or Chennai usually connect through Delhi or Kolkata, and we read the timetable for your month before we quote.
