Rhinos and Tea is a five-night private family journey that begins on the plains with jeep safaris for the one-horned rhino and ends on the Darjeeling ridge. From Bagdogra it spends two nights beside Jaldapara National Park, one in Kalimpong after a Dooars tea garden, and two in Darjeeling for a tea factory and the steam joy ride.

Most visitors to Darjeeling never look down at the plains. About 150 km east of the airport, on the floodplain of the Torsa, Jaldapara's tall grass hides India's second-largest herd of one-horned rhinos, 331 at the March 2025 count. You meet them from an open jeep in the first hour of light, grazing in the mist or standing in a river channel, close enough to hear the grass tear. The same country grows tea: flat gardens of low bushes under tall shade trees, made into the strong, bright CTC granules that are brewed with milk, a different cup from the whole leaf of the hill gardens you reach later.

We built it for families who want the animals and the hills without long days. Safaris are timed for the cool of morning and late afternoon, when rhinos feed and children are fresh, and no drive runs past five hours. We say plainly what the plains offer: the rooms by the park are a four-room family house, comfortable rather than grand, chosen for the forest gate at the end of the lane.

The route

Why Jaldapara (Dooars) comes first

Low to high, warm to cool. Jaldapara sits at about 100 m, so the safaris come first while everyone is fresh and nobody needs to acclimatise. Kalimpong, at 1,247 m, breaks the climb after the longest drive of the week, about five hours. Darjeeling comes last at 2,045 m, only 70 km from Bagdogra, so the final morning is a short run to the airport.

Day 1 · Bagdogra airport Jaldapara

From Bagdogra over the Teesta and east into the Dooars

At Bagdogra your driver is waiting at the arrivals exit, and the car turns east: through Siliguri, across the Teesta at the Coronation Bridge where it leaves the hills, and out into the Dooars, a name that means doors, for the passes that once led up into Bhutan. Tea gardens line long stretches of the road, low bushes under tall shade trees, with the Bhutan foothills blue to the north. Lunch on the way at Malbazar or Chalsa, and a stretch for the children. By about 17:00 you reach Sampan Stay, a four-room house about 500 m from Jaldapara's Salkumar gate. In winter the light is almost gone by then, so stand at the end of the lane and listen: peafowl settling in the sal, and wood smoke drifting from the village. Dinner is home-cooked Bengali food with vegetables from the farm, and bed comes early, because the jeep leaves before sunrise.

Day 2 · Jaldapara (Dooars)

Rhinos in the first hour, Chilapata's forest by evening

Tea at 05:00, and the open jeep leaves the Salkumar gate on the first slot, 06:00 in winter and 05:30 from March, with a forest guide beside the driver. The route runs through tall grass and riverine forest past the site of the Hollong bungalow, burnt in June 2024 and now being rebuilt, to the Harindanga and Jaldapara watchtowers. Rhinos feed in the open in the early hours, often a cow with her calf; gaur, hog deer and peafowl hold the edges, and wild elephants cross when they choose. Back for breakfast at about 08:00, then a long rest through the heat of the day, as the rhinos do. At 14:00 the car takes you about 35 km to Chilapata for its late slot, 15:30 in winter and 16:00 from March: dark sal forest on the elephants' corridor towards Buxa, and the brick ruins of Nalraja Garh, said to date from the Gupta period, roots grown through their walls. You are back at dusk for dinner.

The momentA rhino lifts its head from the grass twenty metres off, still chewing, and decides you are not worth moving for.

InsiderCows carry a horn as well as bulls, but newborn calves have none. Fresh dung heaps by the track mean a rhino passed that morning; they reuse the same piles.

Day 3 · Jaldapara Kalimpong

A last dawn safari, the Dooars tea, then up to Kalimpong

Anyone who wants one more dawn takes a jeep from the Salkumar gate at first light, 06:00 in winter and 05:30 from March, while the rest sleep in. After breakfast, at about 09:00, the car turns west along the foothills. Around Binnaguri, Nagrakata and Chalsa the tea runs for kilometres, and we ask an estate beside the road for half an hour among the bushes and, in season, a look at the CTC line, where leaf is crushed, torn and curled into the small granules of a strong breakfast cup. Dooars tea brews bright and full, a shade lighter than Assam. A packed lunch under the shade trees at about 12:30, then the climb to Kalimpong with the Teesta beside you for much of the afternoon. You reach the MAYFAIR, the old Himalayan Hotel, by about 15:30, and its lawns are wide enough for children who have sat in a car all day. Tea outside, snow peaks from the window if the haze allows, an early night.

Day 4 · Kalimpong Darjeeling

At 07:30, before the lawns fill, the car climbs to Deolo, the town's highest hill at 1,704 m. Hand the children the binoculars: from the top they can follow the Teesta, the river that ran beside them yesterday afternoon, and look down into the Relli valley, with the West Sikkim snows beyond on a clear morning. Breakfast back at the MAYFAIR, and at 09:30 you leave for Darjeeling, two and a half hours by the Peshok road through Lopchu's gardens. Lunch at Glenary's on the Mall, then check in opposite Raj Bhawan. At 15:00 a local car runs you 3 km down to Happy Valley, planted in 1854, for an hour in a Darjeeling factory, where the leaf is rolled and twisted but kept whole instead of torn into granules. From March the troughs and rollers are at work; from November to February nothing is plucked and the machines stand still, so that hour becomes a tasting in town instead. After yesterday's CTC line, the children can tell you the difference before the guide does, and the cups at the end settle it.

InsiderHappy Valley lies about 3 km below the Mall, so the factory costs the children no more than a short ride each way. Its gates work Tuesday to Saturday, 08:00 to 16:00, which is why this visit never falls on a Sunday or a Monday.

Day 5 · Darjeeling

A slow start: breakfast at 08:00, with the MAYFAIR's play area for anyone awake early. Mid-morning you ride the steam train up to Ghum and back, in first class, on seats bought the day the IRCTC window opened. It takes about two hours, with one halt at the Batasia Loop. On the platform at Ghum, 2,258 m, the children stand at the highest point of the whole journey, some 2,150 m above the Jaldapara grass where the week began: ask them which was colder, the open jeep at 06:00 or the station at noon. Lunch at your own pace in town. At 16:30 your guide walks the children up the short, steep lane above Chowrasta to Mahakal on Observatory Hill. The town is named after Dorje-Ling, the monastery that stood on this spot in 1765. In one small yard a lama and a Hindu priest each keep their own rites, a Buddha stands among the lingams, and prayer flags hang in layers overhead. The children ring the bells on the way round.

Day 6 · Darjeeling Bagdogra airport

Down the hill to Bagdogra for the afternoon flights

The car pulls away from the MAYFAIR at 08:30, after breakfast, for the 70 km and roughly three hours down to Bagdogra, by whichever road the driver confirmed last night. Keep a window seat for the last half hour: below the hills the road runs out across the Terai, flat gardens of low CTC bushes under shade trees, the same kind of tea the children walked through in the Dooars on day 3, so the week's tea ends where it began. The airport comes at about 11:30, with time in hand for flights from 13:00. If you fly earlier we set off at 07:00 and the MAYFAIR packs breakfast boxes for the car. Our office stays reachable all the way down, and once you are home we ask how the week went.

Documents: Jaldapara sells safari tickets name by name, so send ID scans for every guest, children included, a week ahead. This route needs no Sikkim permit; foreign guests need only their Indian visa, and the rest is in Permits and visas.
Clothing: an open jeep at 06:00 is cold from December to February, so bring fleeces, caps and gloves you can peel off by 09:00. Darjeeling nights fall to about 4 °C in December and 9 °C in April. Muted colours suit the safaris.
Safari days: there are no safaris on Thursdays, slots last about 90 minutes, and children stay seated with voices low near animals. Carry water; snacks stay in the car.
Travel sickness: the climbs to Kalimpong and Darjeeling are all bends. Keep breakfast light on days 3 and 4 and ask your doctor about medicine for the children.
Insects: use repellent at dusk in the Dooars, and ask your doctor for any travel health advice for rural North Bengal before you fly.
Signal and cash: mobile signal is good in the towns and patchy in the forests. Carry small notes for tea stalls and tips; the MAYFAIR hotels take cards.
Tipping: families usually thank the safari driver and forest guide after each run, and the car driver and guides at the end; suggested figures are in Before you travel.

Where can you see one-horned rhinos near Darjeeling?

In Jaldapara National Park in the Dooars, about 150 km east of Bagdogra airport by the foothill road. The March 2025 census counted 331 rhinos there, the second-largest population in India after Kaziranga; Gorumara, nearer Siliguri, holds a smaller herd. Jeep safaris run from the Salkumar and Madarihat gates in morning and afternoon slots, from mid-September to mid-June, except on Thursdays.

Is it worth coming in December, when the tea factories are quiet?

For the rhinos, yes: December to March is the best time for sightings, with short grass and clear mornings, though the 06:00 jeep is cold enough for fleeces and gloves. The tea is the trade-off. Dooars gardens stop plucking in winter and the Tea Board sets the restart, in February in recent years, so on day 3 you walk the garden while the CTC line stands still. Happy Valley's machines rest from November to February as well, because nothing is plucked, so we book a tasting at Nathmull's instead.

Do you include an elephant safari in Jaldapara?

No. The forest department still offers elephant rides at Jaldapara, but we do not book them. You see the park from open jeeps with a forest guide, which reach the watchtowers, the grassland edges and Chilapata's forest. Rhinos are seen regularly from the jeep routes, though no sighting is ever certain, and wild elephants cross the tracks on their own terms.

Can a five-year-old manage three safaris in two days?

Usually, because each run is short. A safari lasts about 90 minutes, the child rides beside you with a forest guide in the jeep, and the slots fall in the cool of early morning and late afternoon, when rhinos feed. The middle of day 2 is a long rest at Sampan Stay, and the third safari, on the morning of day 3, is optional: anyone tired sleeps in. The one rule is to stay seated and quiet near animals, which children learn on the first run.

How is this different from The Hills with Children?

The Hills with Children stays in the hills for six nights, with red pandas at Darjeeling's zoo, a cactus house in Kalimpong and no drive over three hours. Rhinos and Tea spends its first two nights on the plains for the safaris, so it has one five-hour day, from Jaldapara up to Kalimpong, and simpler rooms by the park. Choose this one if the children want big animals; choose the other if short drives matter most.

What is the difference between Dooars tea and Darjeeling tea?

Dooars tea grows on the plains below the hills and is made mostly as CTC, crushed, torn and curled into small granules for strong, bright cups taken with milk. Darjeeling tea grows on slopes between about 600 and 2,000 m, is made as whole leaf, and only the 87 recognised estates may use the name. On this journey you walk a Dooars garden and see a Darjeeling factory at Happy Valley.
