In short
What is the best Darjeeling and Kalimpong itinerary?
Kanchenjunga at First Light suits most first visits: three dawns in Darjeeling, then the same mountain from Pelling and from Kalimpong, with nothing higher than Tiger Hill. The First Time adds Gangtok and a day at 3,753 m instead. For tea, The Planter's Week; with three nights, The Toy Train Weekend or The Quiet Ridge; with children, The Hills with Children; for two, A Himalayan Honeymoon.
Count your nights first. Two or three are enough for one hill: the town for the railway and the dawn, Kalimpong for gardens and rest, or an estate for tea. Five to seven let you pair two ridges, or give the whole week to one estate, and the pairing matters more than the list of sights: the town and Kalimpong for contrast, an estate and the town for tea, or the town and Pelling for the mountain from two sides. With eight nights or more, carry on across a border into Bhutan or Nepal, or deeper into Sikkim.
Then the season. October to December gives the clearest dawns, and March and April the first flush and the rhododendrons. Two journeys are built around a single week: Tihar, which falls on 7 to 11 November in 2026, and Christmas. From mid June to mid September the monsoon hides the peaks, and the Singalila ridge and the Dooars parks close.
Pace and party settle the rest. Most routes here are gentle, and the table above shows the longest drive on each; the two walking journeys ask for 8 to 15 km on a hill day. Grandparents do best on the lower bases, Kurseong and Kalimpong, where the nights are milder than in town.
Darjeeling and Kalimpong need no permit for any passport. Routes that cross into Sikkim need the online Restricted Area Permit for foreign and OCI guests, about 30 days ahead, and Bhutan and Nepal have papers of their own.

How the hills fit
Ridges and rivers, and what each is for
The Darjeeling hills are a set of ridges split by two rivers, the Teesta and the Rangeet, and each base does one thing best. Choose the base and the journey follows.

Darjeeling town, 2,045 m
The highest and coldest base, built for dawns: the railway's terminus, Observatory Hill and the old hotels. In late December nights fall to about 3 to 4 °C and days sit near 14 °C. Give it two nights at least, because the mountain keeps its own timetable.

Kurseong, about 1,480 m
First-flush country, about 560 m below Darjeeling and the nearest hill base to Bagdogra, 37 to 42 km away. A soft first night after a flight, and the warmer choice for grandparents.

The Rangeet estates, about 985 m
Glenburn's bungalows stand above the Rangeet and the Rung Dung, about 75 minutes below the town. The warmest of the hill bases, where the estate puts winter nights above 7 °C. The place to stop moving.

Kalimpong, about 1,250 m
Across the Teesta, about 800 m lower than Darjeeling and 55 km away by road: nurseries, monasteries, old houses and milder nights. It sits on the roads to Gangtok and to the Bhutan border, so longer routes pass through.

The Singalila ridge, up to 3,636 m
The India and Nepal border, walked from Tumling to Sandakphu with beds in simple lodges. The national park closes from mid June to mid September.

The Dooars, about 100 m
The plains at the foot of the hills, where grassland and river forest at Jaldapara hold one-horned rhinos. The parks close from mid June to mid September, and October's grass stands tall, so November to April is the time.

Three questions about darjeeling and kalimpong
We have been to Darjeeling before. Which of these is new ground?
Cross the Teesta or leave the car. The Quiet Ridge gives Kalimpong three unhurried nights; Kitchens of the Hills reads the towns through their markets and kitchens; The Tea Trail follows the leaf into Sikkim; The Singalila Ridge walks the Nepal border to Sandakphu, 3,636 m, where Everest and Kanchenjunga share one horizon. For the next country, Across the Mechi carries on to Kathmandu, and From the Hills into Bhutan reaches Paro by road.
We can only come in March or April. Is that a mistake?
Not at all, but choose for the season rather than against it. Spring brings the first flush, the rhododendrons and mild days, while haze often hides the mountain by mid-morning. That favours The Planter's Week and The Tea Trail for tea at its freshest, and Red Pandas and Rhododendrons or The Singalila Ridge for the forests in flower. Journeys built on dawns still work, since the range is clearest at first light, but keep your hopes for the view modest.
Is there anything here for a party of seven or more?
Three Generations is built for it: four to nine guests in two cars travelling together, so part of the family can go back to rest without ending the day for everyone else. Christmas in the Hills also takes larger families in two cars. Most of the other journeys are planned for two to six guests in one car.
