In short

Is Three Generations right for you?

Three Generations is a seven-night private journey for grandparents, parents and children travelling together, starting and ending at Bagdogra (IXB). You spend four nights at Taj Chia Kutir inside the Makaibari tea estate below Kurseong, with Darjeeling as one gentle day out, then three nights at the MAYFAIR in Kalimpong.

Made forgrandparents in their late sixties to eighties, families of five to nine in two cars, milestone birthdays and anniversaries and anyone who finds stairs or cold nights hard.

Not for you ifFamilies who want Tiger Hill at dawn, Sikkim's high lakes or a long sightseeing list will find this too gentle, and The First Time: Darjeeling and Sikkim suits them better.

A family of three generations moves at the speed of its oldest member and the patience of its youngest, and most hill itineraries suit neither. Darjeeling, at 2,045 m, is cold at night, its lanes climb hard, and its famous sunrise asks for a 04:00 start. So every bed on this journey is below 1,500 m, every outing ends before the oldest traveller tires, and the famous ridge is visited, not slept on.

We plan for three sets of needs at once. Grandparents get a lift or a level room, a doctor briefed in each town, a folding wheelchair in the boot and the history they grew up with, from Netaji's house to Glenary's. Parents get a spa, a tasting table and afternoons that are truly free. Children get a heated pool, a butterfly trail, a toy train running through a bazaar and a lawn at Deolo. Two cars travel together, so anyone can go back to rest without ending the day for everyone else.

The route

Why Kurseong (Makaibari) comes first

Kurseong comes first because it is the shortest first drive in the hills: about 40 km and an hour and a quarter from Bagdogra, so grandparents arrive rested, not wrung out. Four nights there mean one unpacking for half the trip, and Darjeeling becomes a day out rather than a night in its cold. Then the Peshok road carries you to Kalimpong in about 3.5 hours with stops, for three softer days. Kalimpong is 80 km from Bagdogra, so the journey home is as easy as the arrival.

The shape of the journey

From 126 m to 2,258 m, day by day

You sleep between 1,247 m and 1,400 m. The highest you go is 2,258 m, on day 3 at Ghum, and you come down again to sleep.

Built around

Kurseong (Makaibari) and Kalimpong at their best

  • Four nights inside Makaibari's gardens, where the estate's factory dates to 1859

  • The Kurseong house where Subhas Chandra Bose was held under house arrest in 1936

  • Darjeeling in one gentle day: Batasia's benches, Glenary's, and tea weighed at Nathmull's

  • Cottages a few steps from the dining room, a spa and a pool at the MAYFAIR in Kalimpong

  • Two cars, a briefed doctor in each town, and no drive over 3.5 hours

Day by day

Day by day, Kurseong (Makaibari) to Kalimpong

The longest drive is day 5, Kurseong to Kalimpong, about 3.5 hours with stops.

  1. Day 1 · Bagdogra airport Kurseong

Forty kilometres to a tea garden bed

    • 40 km, about 1.5 h
    • High point 1,400 m
    • Sleep at 1,400 m
    • Easy
A glass of amber Darjeeling tea held up beside the toy train track and a quiet hill road under a pale sky

We meet you at the Bagdogra arrivals exit with two cars: the first for the grandparents, front seat pushed back and a cushion for the lower back, the second for everyone else and the luggage. If anyone needs the airline's wheelchair, we requested it with your booking and our driver waits at the kerb. The road crosses the plain and turns up into the tea on Pankhabari Road, and in an hour and a quarter, an hour and a half at most, you reach Taj Chia Kutir, inside the Makaibari estate. We asked for your rooms on one floor near the lift, and a late lunch is ready when you are. The afternoon is for rest. At 17:00 the children ride the hotel shuttle down to the heated indoor pool with one parent, while the grandparents take tea on the terrace. Dinner is at 19:00, and the kitchen already has our note on every diet at the table, from diabetic breakfasts to Jain dinners.

The momentThe first cup on the terrace comes with a view of the tea gardens you drove through twenty minutes earlier.

InsiderThe heated pool and gym sit below the main block and guests reach them by the hotel's shuttle: we get its timings at check-in so nobody walks the slope after dark.

If the weather turnsIf Pankhabari Road is shut by a slip, we climb by Rohini Road to Kurseong and come down to the estate, adding about half an hour and nothing else.

Makaibari: the 1859 factory and a butterfly trail

    • 6 km, about 0.5 h
    • High point 1,400 m
    • Sleep at 1,400 m
    • Easy
Clipped tea bushes rising on two slopes at Golpahar in Darjeeling, lone trees on the ridge against a clear blue sky

Breakfast at 08:30, no earlier. At 10:00 the car takes you down to the Makaibari factory, first commissioned in 1859, which the estate describes as the first tea factory in the world. In plucking season the leaf lies in long withering troughs and the rollers are turning, and the smell reaches the car park. Makaibari became the first garden certified as fully organic, in 1988, and its forests cover twice the area of its tea. After the tour the whole family sits at one tasting table, cups in a row, and learns to slurp. At 11:45 the children and one parent walk part of the Vernelli butterfly trail with a guide, while the grandparents stay on with the tea. Lunch is yours to take at leisure. The afternoon brings the spa for the parents and the resort's children's activities, which have included nature painting and tent-making; we ask for the week's schedule in advance. On a clear night the hotel sets up for stargazing.

The momentThree generations sit at one tasting table, and the youngest slurps loudest, exactly as professional tasters do.

InsiderLeopards and barking deer live in Makaibari's forests, so we end estate walks well before dusk; the butterflies fly best on a sunny late morning.

If the weather turnsIn December and January the bushes rest and the rollers are silent, so your guide walks the family along the garden roads instead and the cups are laid out at the resort.

    Darjeeling at a grandparent's pace

    • 78 km, about 3 h
    • High point 2,258 m
    • Sleep at 1,400 m
    • Easy
Local men in jackets chatting outside Chowrasta Stores on the Mall in Darjeeling, a black and white morning street scene

The cars leave at 08:45 and climb 36 km through Sonada and Ghum, about 1.5 hours, with a folding wheelchair in the boot. At 10:15 we stop at the Batasia Loop, where the railway, laid out in a spiral in 1919, circles the Gorkha war memorial garden: paved paths, benches and, on a clear morning, Kanchenjunga beyond. At 11:15 the cars stop at the point on the Mall road closest to Chowrasta, and your guide walks at the grandparents' pace to a bench beside Bhanubhakta's statue. If that walk is too much, the grandparents stay on the benches at Batasia a little longer and meet everyone at lunch, while parents and children climb the short lane to Mahakal. At 12:45, lunch at a window table at Glenary's on Nehru Road. At 14:15 we call at Nathmull's on Laden La Road, tea merchants since 1931, where tea is weighed out to take home. The cars start back at 15:30, and you are at the estate by 17:00.

The momentAt a Glenary's window table, a grandparent who last ate here decades ago orders for the grandchildren and describes the Mall as it was.

InsiderChowrasta is closed to cars, so we drop the grandparents at the nearest point on the Mall road and a guide walks beside them; the car waits with the wheelchair.

If the weather turnsIf the ridge is in cloud or rain, we skip Batasia, keep Glenary's and Nathmull's, and add the railway museum at Ghum station, which is under cover.

    • Easy
A Darjeeling toy train steam engine pouring white smoke as it rounds a bend of the road through Kurseong

A slow start, and the cars leave at 10:00 for Kurseong town, a short drive up the hill. Eagle's Crag, in the middle of town, has a watchtower, a small flower garden and a café pouring local tea, with the tea estates falling away below. At 11:00 we drive 5 to 10 minutes to Giddapahar and the house Sarat Chandra Bose bought in 1922. His younger brother Subhas was held here under house arrest for seven months in 1936, and the rooms now keep photographs and belongings from the lives of both brothers. For grandparents who grew up on Netaji's story, this is the morning of the week. At 12:15 we stop above Kurseong station, the heart of the town, where the toy train runs down the high street and a one-room railway museum keeps the line's small relics. Lunch at the resort at 13:30. The afternoon is free: the spa, the pool, or a long sleep.

The momentIn the house where Subhas Bose spent seven months under guard in 1936, a grandparent explains to a grandchild why it still matters.

InsiderThe toy train shares Kurseong's high street with shops and cars, so our driver parks above the station and you watch it pass without stepping into the road.

If the weather turnsIf the museum is shut for a holiday, we begin at the station museum and take tea at Eagle's Crag; in rain, the afternoon's rest simply starts earlier.

    • Sleep at 1,247 m
    • Easy
Green tea estates covering the Darjeeling hills around a small village, a lane winding down between the bushes

Bags go out at 09:00 and the cars leave at 09:30, the grandparents' car in front so it sets the pace. The road climbs past Sonada to Ghum, then turns off at Jorebunglow onto the Peshok road, through cryptomeria and then the Lopchu and Peshok tea gardens. We stop every 45 minutes whether anyone asks or not. At about 11:15 the flask comes out at a lay-by above Peshok, with the Teesta and the Rangeet meeting far below. The last 19 km fall steeply to the Teesta bridge, and 16 km of climbing bring you to Kalimpong by about 13:00, 74 km in all. Your house for three nights is the MAYFAIR, whose lawns, cottages and newer wings spread over one plot above the town. Lunch is ready. The grandparents take Deluxe Cottages on the main grounds, close to the dining room, with the heaters on before they walk in, and the afternoon is for sleep.

The momentAbove Peshok the flask goes round three generations, and the youngest pours for the oldest first.

InsiderGhum, at 2,258 m, is the coldest point of the day even when Kurseong is mild: we keep shawls and a hot flask in the grandparents' car before we set off.

If the weather turnsIf the Peshok road closes, we go down to Siliguri and up the Teesta on NH10 instead, up to an hour longer, and the hotel keeps lunch for you.

Durpin at prayer time, and an orchid for home

    • 15 km, about 0.5 h
    • High point 1,372 m
    • Sleep at 1,247 m
    • Easy
Two young monks in maroon robes laughing together on a monastery wall in Kalimpong, a pale cloudy sky behind them

At 08:15 the cars take the short road up Durpin Hill and stop close to the entrance of Zang Dhok Palri, so the grandparents walk only a few steps. When prayers are under way, the family sits at the back in coats and slips out before anyone tires. The army keeps most of Durpin, so the road is quiet, and from the hill's edge the Teesta valley opens towards the snows of West Sikkim. At 10:30 we visit Nurseryman's Haven on the main highway just outside town, where one family has grown orchids for export for more than fifty years. The grower shows you cymbidiums and bulbs and packs what you choose to travel within India. Lunch at the hotel. From 16:00 the house divides by age: the spa for the parents, the pool and play area for the children, and a pot of tea on the lawn for the grandparents.

The momentA grandmother chooses an orchid to carry home, and the grower wraps it for the journey while the grandchildren watch.

InsiderNurseries pack plants to travel within India; guests flying abroad should buy only what their own country's import rules allow, and soil is rarely welcome.

If the weather turnsIf the monastery hall is closed for a ceremony, we walk its outer prayer wheels and stay longer at the nursery; in rain, tea begins earlier.

Snows from the lawn, a school chapel, cheese on toast

    • Sleep at 1,247 m
    • Easy
Kanchenjunga's peaks lit orange at sunrise above dark blue ridges, seen from Rishop in the Kalimpong hills

No early drive today. At 06:15, if the snows show from the grounds, we knock for whoever asked and pour tea on the MAYFAIR's lawn while the rest of the house sleeps. At 10:00 the cars go to Dr Graham's Homes, the school John Anderson Graham founded in 1900 on the slopes below Deolo, where we have asked for a visit to the Katherine Graham Memorial Chapel, completed in 1925. The cars then climb a little further to Deolo's gardens, where level paths and benches look down towards the Teesta. Back at the hotel for lunch and a long rest. At tea, if a small maker in town has a fresh wheel, Kalimpong cheese arrives melted on toast, as the town has eaten it since a Swiss priest began making it in the 1950s. At 19:00 comes the farewell dinner, at a table we have asked the MAYFAIR to lay apart from the main room, with the dishes each generation liked best during the week.

The momentOn the lawn at 06:30, the earliest-rising grandparent and grandchild have the snows to themselves, cups in hand.

InsiderKalimpong cheese comes from a few small makers in batches and some weeks there is none: we ask in town the day you arrive and buy a wheel as soon as one comes in.

If the weather turnsIf the school cannot receive visitors that day, we drive past its cottages to Deolo's gardens; if cloud hides the snows at dawn, nobody is woken.

Home through the Teesta gorge, assistance booked

    • 80 km, about 3 h
    • High point 1,247 m
    • Easy
The Teesta winding through a deep green gorge between forested hills, seen from high above on a clear day

Most flights from Bagdogra leave from 13:00, so breakfast is at 07:00 and the cars roll at 07:45, early enough for an unhurried stop on the way. The evening before, we look hard at NH10 and the forecast, and if either is doubtful the whole family moves down to a hotel near the airport that night rather than gamble on the morning. The road follows the Teesta down its gorge to Sevoke, 80 km and about 3 hours in all, and you reach Bagdogra near 11:00. We asked your airline for wheelchair assistance when you booked and confirmed it yesterday, so the staff meet the car at the kerb. The second car carries the luggage, so the grandparents walk in with nothing to lift. Medicines, spectacles and the tea from Nathmull's ride in the cabin bags, and our team stays on the phone until the last of you is through security.

The momentSomewhere past the Teesta gorge the youngest falls asleep on a grandparent's shoulder, and nobody moves until Bagdogra.

InsiderAsk for wheelchair assistance on the ticket itself, not at the counter: we confirm it with the airline the day before so it is waiting at the kerb.

If the weather turnsIf NH10 shuts overnight, the cars take the Lava and Gorubathan road from 06:00, about five hours, with breakfast packed and rest stops for the grandparents.

Before you go

Before you go on this route

Choose another journey ifFamilies who want Tiger Hill at dawn, Sikkim's high lakes or a long sightseeing list will find this too gentle, and The First Time: Darjeeling and Sikkim suits them better.

  1. Papers: no permit is needed for Kurseong, Darjeeling or Kalimpong. Bring photo ID for every adult and a birth certificate for each child; guests from abroad need an Indian visa, and our Permits and visas guide has the rest.
  2. Health: ask each grandparent's doctor about a day trip to 2,258 m, the highest point on the Darjeeling day. Send us medical notes before travel and we brief the local doctor in each town.
  3. Medicines: carry two weeks' supply split across two bags, with prescriptions. Kurseong and Kalimpong have pharmacies, but a particular brand may not be stocked.
  4. Clothing: Kalimpong nights average about 9 °C in December and 7 °C in January, and Ghum and Darjeeling are colder. Bring layers, a warm jacket, shawls, woollen socks and slip-on shoes with grip.
  5. Mobility: tell us how many steps each person manages comfortably. Darjeeling's Mall rises from every car stop; the Kurseong and Kalimpong visits are chosen for short walks.
  6. Insurance: buy cover that includes medical treatment and evacuation. The region's larger hospitals are in Siliguri, about 1.5 hours below Kurseong.
  7. Phones and cash: Indian networks work in all three towns. Carry small notes for tea stops and temple offerings; hotels take cards. For tips, see the Before you travel guide.

Questions

Six questions about Three Generations

Ask on WhatsApp
Kurseong or Darjeeling: where should a family with grandparents stay?

Kurseong, for most three-generation families. It lies about 560 m lower than Darjeeling, so nights are milder, and it is only about 40 km, an hour and a quarter, from Bagdogra. Taj Chia Kutir, inside the Makaibari estate, lists a lift, an indoor heated pool and a spa. Darjeeling is 36 km further up the hill, which makes it an easy day out rather than a place to sleep.

How do the two cars work?

The grandparents' car always goes first and sets the pace, with the front seat pushed back, shawls and a hot flask. The second car takes the luggage and whoever wants to see more. On the Darjeeling day one car waits near Chowrasta with the wheelchair while the other stays free, and on any day either car can take someone back to rest without ending the outing for everyone else.

How high does this journey go?

Not high. You sleep at about 1,400 m among Makaibari's sections and 1,247 m in Kalimpong, below the heights where altitude illness usually begins. The highest point is Ghum, 2,258 m, which you pass on the Darjeeling day and again on the way to Kalimpong; Darjeeling itself, at 2,045 m, is a day visit, never a night. Cold air and steep walking are the real strain, so each grandparent should still check with their own doctor.

How many steps are there between the car and the bed?

The count depends on the room, so we get it for your dates rather than print one here. Taj Chia Kutir lists a lift and step-free routes, though its pool is reached by the hotel shuttle. The MAYFAIR in Kalimpong lists no lift, so the grandparents take Deluxe Cottages on the main grounds. Before you arrive we ask each house for the route from car to bed, including the number of steps, and pass it on to you.

What if a grandparent feels unwell during the week?

Before you arrive we brief a local doctor in Kurseong and another in Kalimpong on your family's medical notes, and the numbers travel in both cars. Because there are two cars, one can take the grandparent back while the rest carry on. The larger private hospitals are in Siliguri, about 1.5 hours below Kurseong and about 3 hours from Kalimpong, and insurance with evacuation cover is essential.

Why seven nights for three generations?

Seven nights gives a short arrival day and a short departure day, five full days across two bases, and rest every afternoon. Fewer nights mean packing more often, and packing tires older travellers most. Four nights near Kurseong mean one unpacking for half the week, and Darjeeling becomes a single planned day rather than a cold night on the ridge.
