From the Hills into Bhutan is an eight-night private road journey that starts at Bagdogra airport and ends with a flight home from Paro. It spends two nights in Kalimpong and one at the Phuentsholing gate, then climbs to Thimphu for two nights and Paro for three.

For much of the 20th century, Bhutan's business with the outside world passed through Kalimpong. Bhutan held this ridge from the early 1700s until the treaty of 1865; afterwards the Dorji family, the kingdom's agents, one of whom became its prime minister, kept their house here on Rishi Road. The 13th Dalai Lama stayed in it in 1912. A future queen of Bhutan was born in it in 1930. Until 1961 there was no motor road into her country at all: the 205 km from the border to Thimphu took six days.

This journey follows that connection at ground level. It stands you at the gates of the house, takes you across plains whose name means doors, sits you at lunch in the canteen of Project Dantak, the Indian road builders set up in 1961, and gives you a day in Haa, the valley the Dorjis governed. The queen born on Rishi Road keeps reappearing: in a Guru temple she raised at Kyichu, in the dzong her husband rebuilt as the seat of government, and in the Paro valley where she married the crown prince in 1951.

Why Kalimpong comes first

Kalimpong comes first because it is only 80 km from Bagdogra and sits at a kind 1,247 m, an easy first night after the flight. The road day follows on day three, 180 km and about five hours, so everything after it is short. Thimphu before Paro, because the capital gives you the context; Paro last, because the airport, the Haa road and the Tiger's Nest all start from that one valley.

At Bagdogra your driver meets you at the arrivals exit, not inside the hall, and the Teesta gorge road brings you up to Kalimpong in about three hours. The MAYFAIR, once the Himalayan Hotel, has seven Heritage Rooms in its first building, each with a fireplace; yours is one of them, and we have asked for the fire to be lit before you walk in. Tomorrow you stand at the gate of Bhutan House, where the 13th Dalai Lama stayed in 1912, so tonight your guide gives you the fact that frames the week: one reading of Kalimpong's own name, from the Tibetan, is the stockade of the king's ministers, and for about 150 years, until 1865, this ridge was Bhutan's. Dinner is at the hotel, and if a fresh Kalimpong cheese has come into town this week, it arrives with the bread.

Day 2 · Kalimpong

Bhutan's old front door, on Rishi Road

At 09:00, Thongsa Gompa, still called the Bhutanese monastery here: local accounts give 1692 for its founding and 1964 for the rebuilding, and nothing older stands on the ridge. At 10:30 the car runs out along Rishi Road to the gates of Bhutan House. It is a private home, so you see it from the road, and the story is the point. From here the Dorji family ran Bhutan's trade and diplomacy with British India. In 1912 the 13th Dalai Lama lodged here for three months, and left the house a Tibetan name that means the Palace of Unchanging Delight. In 1918 a Gangtok-born princess of Sikkim, Choying Wangmo, was married here to Sonam Topgay Dorji, and in 1930 their daughter, Ashi Kesang Choden, now Bhutan's Queen Grandmother, was born inside. Lunch of thukpa and momos in town. At 15:00, an hour with a grower in one of the orchid nurseries on the edge of town, the trade that made Kalimpong a nursery town. The evening is yours, at the spa or by the fire.

Day 3 · Kalimpong Phuentsholing

Down through the doors of the Dooars
- 180 km, about 5 h

Leave at 08:00, down to the Teesta and south through the gorge to Sevoke, where you cross the river and turn east. This is the Dooars. Bhutan held these plains until 1865, and the name means doors: the passes that climb from here into its hills. For two hours the road runs between tea gardens, the bushes clipped flat beneath lines of shade trees, and over wide, stony rivers coming down from the north. Lunch at 12:00 at Sinclairs Retreat Dooars in Chalsa, above the gardens. By about 15:30 you reach Jaigaon, its main street crowded right up to the Bhutan Gate. Here the journey changes hands, and we plan it for a weekday, when the immigration office keeps its 09:00 to 17:00 hours. Your Bhutanese guide, registered at the land port 48 hours ahead as a September 2026 rule requires, meets you at the gate with your papers. Your driver from the hills moves the bags into a Bhutanese car, because an Indian car beyond the Rinchending checkpoint pays Nu 4,500 a night. Walk through the gate and set your watch 30 minutes forward. At dusk, walk to Zangtho Pelri Lhakhang in the centre of town, a temple built as Guru Rinpoche's Copper-Coloured Mountain.

Day 4 · Phuentsholing Thimphu

The road that replaced a six-day walk

Leave at 08:30 after breakfast at the Druk. The highway ahead was cut in 1961 and 1962 with Indian aid and some 30,000 labourers from India and Nepal; before it, the walk from the border to Thimphu took six days. Now it takes about five and a half hours. Your guide shows the permits at the Rinchending checkpoint just above town. The road climbs from 293 m through wet forest, past Gedu, and into the Wang Chhu gorge at Chukha. Lunch is at the Takthi canteen halfway up, run by Project Dantak, the Indian road builders set up in 1961 by agreement between Bhutan's third king and Nehru: Indian food, strong tea, and truck drivers and road engineers at the next table. Terma Linca sits on a bend of the Wang Chhu at Babesa, the first stretch of Thimphu you reach, so you check in by about 15:00 without crossing town. Walk the river path before dark.

Day 5 · Thimphu

Thimphu: takin, a market and the seat of state

Start at 09:00 at the Motithang preserve for the takin, Bhutan's national animal, which legend says the Divine Madman made from a cow's body and a goat's head. The takin came here when a small zoo was closed and the animals refused to leave town. At 10:30 the Folk Heritage Museum, a restored farmhouse furnished as a family once lived in it, open from 10:30 on weekdays. Lunch in town. Then Kaja Throm, the rebuilt farmers' market by the river: strings of chugo, the dried yak cheese, fern shoots in season, red rice and heaps of chilli. Weekends often bring an archery match to Changlimithang; if one is on, we give it half an hour: archers in gho loose arrows at a target some 145 m off, and their team sings when one hits. Tashichho Dzong last, because it takes visitors only when the government offices close, from about 17:00: the third king made it his government's seat. His queen, Ashi Kesang Choden, grew up at Bhutan House and was schooled by Irish nuns at St Joseph's Convent in Kalimpong, the town you left two mornings ago.

Day 6 · Thimphu Paro

To Paro, and a queen's temple at Kyichu

A slow morning, and Paro by lunch: the car leaves at 10:30 and follows the rivers down and round, about an hour and a half. The airport's runway appears first, laid along the valley floor. Lunch in Paro town. At 14:00, Kyichu Lhakhang, among the oldest temples in the country, and beside it the Guru temple that Ashi Kesang Choden raised in 1971, consecrated by Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. At 15:30, Rinpung Dzong, whose courtyard holds Paro's masked dances each spring. Your guide shows you where Ugyen Pelri stands, the royal palace in this valley where she married the crown prince in 1951; it is not open to visitors. Then up through the pines to COMO Uma Paro, your house for three nights, and dinner at the lodge.

Day 7 · Paro

Over Chele La to the Dorji family's valley

Leave at 07:30 with a thermos and a picnic, and cross Chele La, 3,988 m, the highest road pass of the week, where on a clear morning from October to December Jomolhari stands white to the north. Then 26 km down into Haa, a narrow valley of wheat, buckwheat and yak pasture that opened to foreign visitors only in 2002 and is still one of the least visited in Bhutan. This was the Dorji family's home ground. Ugyen Dorji of Bhutan House governed it, his son Sonam Topgay followed him, and his grandson Jigme Palden Dorji was named its administrator at the age of nine. Visit Lhakhang Karpo, the White Temple, which local historians date to the 7th century with Kyichu. Your guide looks for a Haa kitchen making hoentay, the valley's buckwheat dumplings of turnip leaves and cheese, to add to the picnic by the Haa Chhu. Back in Paro by 16:00.

Day 8 · Paro

Taktsang in the cool of the morning

Coffee at 06:00 in your room, and on the path by 07:15, the morning after Chele La, with lungs that spent an hour at 3,988 m yesterday. A pony, booked ahead as the rules require, can carry you as far as the cafeteria; the rest is on foot, and the climb's facts are in the Taktsang card on our Bhutan page (/destinations/bhutan/#taktsang). Inside, butter lamps and low chanting fill the chapels that grew around Guru Rinpoche's cave; he is said to have flown here on a tigress. Take your time; there is no queue behind you at this hour. Down by 13:00 for a late lunch at the lodge. The afternoon asks nothing of you: sleep, read, or book a massage at the spa. At 17:30 your guide drives you down to the covered bridge below Rinpung Dzong to watch its walls take the last light. Dinner at the lodge, and pack tonight.

Wheels up from the Paro valley

Breakfast at 06:45 with the valley below you. COMO Uma Paro is about ten minutes from the airport, so the car leaves at 07:30 for the 09:40 Drukair flight to Delhi, daily in the October 2026 timetable; Kolkata and Bagdogra flights go on set days, and we book the one that suits your onward plans. Paro's runway lies at 2,235 m between ridges up to 5,500 m high, and only a small number of pilots are certified to land on it. Flights move in daylight and good visibility only. When Drukair's first aircraft landed here in February 1983, the high lama of Paro Dzong chose the minute of landing and even the direction it was parked. Your guide and driver see you to the terminal door. Our team in the Darjeeling hills keeps its line open until you are home.

Papers: Indian guests need an original passport or voter ID for Bhutan; other passports need the US$40 visa and an Indian visa that lets you back in by air. The detail is on /plan/permits-and-visas/. Kalimpong needs no permit.
Day three has to fall on a weekday: the Phuentsholing immigration office keeps 09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday. We set your dates around it.
Keep your passport or voter ID in the day bag, not the suitcase: it is checked at Rinchending above Phuentsholing and again further up the road.
Bhutan runs 30 minutes ahead of India. Every time on this page from Phuentsholing onward, your flight included, is Bhutan time.
Pack for a range: Kalimpong's November nights sit around 11 °C, while Thimphu and Paro fall to about freezing in December and Chele La is colder still. Bring a down layer, a warm hat and shoes with grip.
You never sleep above 2,320 m. Chele La (3,988 m) and Taktsang (3,120 m) are day visits: walk slowly, drink water, and tell your guide about any headache.
Rupees in small notes pass at par with the ngultrum, and a local SIM is easiest to buy in Phuentsholing on day three.

Can you drive from Kalimpong or Darjeeling to Bhutan?

Yes. Kalimpong to the Phuentsholing gate is about 180 km and five hours, down the Teesta to Sevoke and east through the Dooars; from Darjeeling allow six to seven hours. Indian cars may enter Phuentsholing town, but beyond the Rinchending checkpoint they pay Nu 4,500 per vehicle per night, so most journeys, ours included, change to a Bhutanese car and a licensed guide at the gate.

What happens at the Phuentsholing gate?

Your driver from the hills brings you to the Bhutan Gate at Jaigaon on a weekday afternoon, because the immigration office works 09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday. Your Bhutanese guide, registered at the land port 48 hours ahead, meets you with permits filed weeks before; the bags move to a Bhutanese car; your watch goes 30 minutes forward. If papers run late, they are finished at 09:00 next morning.

From the Hills into Bhutan or Two Kingdoms?

Choose this journey to cross by road from Kalimpong, with Bhutan House, the Dooars and a day in Haa, in eight nights. Is the Haa valley worth a day from Paro?

Yes, when the pass is open. Haa opened to foreign visitors only in 2002 and is still one of Bhutan's least visited valleys, with a White Temple that local historians date to the 7th century and the Dorji family's history in its fields. The road crosses Chele La at 3,988 m, which also readies your lungs for Taktsang next morning. From December to February snow can close the pass.

How long are the road days, and will grandparents manage them?

The two long days come early: Kalimpong to Phuentsholing, about five hours with lunch at Chalsa, and Phuentsholing to Thimphu, about five and a half with lunch at the Dantak canteen. After that the longest is the Chele La day, and we can turn back at the pass if Haa is a step too far. You never sleep above 2,320 m, and a pony can carry anyone to the Taktsang cafeteria.
